Tutorials & Guides
Recently, I had the opportunity to test the new PLx1.4 Mark II extender from IB/E Optics. Just like the Mark I, it extends the focal length of your lens by 1.4x, and only loses one stop of light in the process. It also has an image circle of up to 34.5mm, which means it can resolve up to 6K, on the RED EPIC DRAGON for example.
Intro image for article 8K: What Is it Good For? (or, RED's MONSTRO, Full Format, and The Bayer "Tax")
Tutorials & Guides
RED has released no fewer than three 8K cameras since 2015. First was the full format WEAPON DRAGON VV (short for VistaVision), notably used by Henry Braham, BSC on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Next came the EPIC-W and WEAPON HELIUM, both using RED's 8K S35 HELIUM sensor, which packed 8K of pixels into an area similar in size to the standard 3-perf Super35 format and provided a new level of noise performance, especially when scaled down to deliverable resolutions like UHD 3840x2160 or good old HD (1920x1080). Finally, last fall, RED released a replacement for that first 8K camera, incorporating the new sensor technology from their HELIUM chip, and dubbed it MONSTRO. But, aside from resolution, what are the advantages of these 8K sensors? One answer might surprise you: color.

Intro image for article Media Management On Set: Best Practices with the G-Speed Shuttle XL
Tutorials & Guides
Media management might seem like a boring topic. Which it is, until it isn't. In the grand tradition of filmmaking — which is to say, giving a job with an incredibly high level of responsibility to one of the lowest paid positions on set (see: loader) — media management can be a great way to get on set, or at least near it if you're starting out in the industry (even if that's a "temporary offload location" set up inside an establishment whose name begin with "Star" and ends with "bucks").

Tutorials & Guides
The Canon C200 is a compact camcorder that utilizes the same basic sensor as their flagship Super35 digital cinema camera, the C700. One of the C200's most striking features is the ability to record 4K RAW files in Canon's new Cinema RAW Light format to an internal CFast card. Cinema RAW Light is a lightly compressed RAW video format that maximizes recording time while giving up very little file quality in comparison to "full fat" RAW.

Tutorials & Guides
In this blog, I look at the latest lens support offerings from Bright Tangerine, which include a 19mm studio support, called Marr, and a 15mm studio companion, called Joyce. There's also a brand new 15mm lightweight lens support addition, known as the Morrissey.
Intro image for article At the Bench: Schneider RHOdium FSND Filters
Tutorials & Guides
Schneider has pushed ND filter technology forward with their line of Full Spectrum ND filters. As the name implies, these ND filters take into account the full spectrum of possible IR contamination. Previously, ND filters addressed the IR contamination that sensors captured in certain shooting conditions, but with a shift in dark colors. Full Spectrum ND filters are designed to complement refinements in sensor manufacturing that help address IR contamination.
