AbelCine's FOV Tool 2.0 is here! This update to our original, and very popular, FOV (field of view) Comparator allows you to compare camera and lens combinations, including a variety of sensor sizes, recording resolutions, and aspect ratios. Of course, the new tool features the latest cameras and even more lenses.

Sony has released the highly-anticipated firmware version 6.0 for their VENICE camera, which brings with it the new Advanced Rendering Transform color management system (‘ART’), expanded top-end frame rates, a new frame lines interface with options for multi-format shooting, and more.

Running about a month ahead of schedule, Sony today announced the availability of firmware version 2.0 for the PXW-FX9 full-frame digital cinema camera. Originally scheduled for October, the new firmware brings 16-bit RAW output (in conjunction with the XDCA-FX9 extension unit), new 4K recording and sensor modes, 180fps shooting in HD, and improved image quality when shooting in the camera’s Super35 2K mode, among other enhancements.

In our tradition of providing scene files for the latest professional cinema cameras, we have created a collection of scene files for the Sony PXW-FX9. These files are based on the looks AbelCine has been creating for many years and are designed to fit a variety of common shooting scenarios.

As with so many other brands in the past, AbelCine has compiled a new camera chart for easy comparison of the features and specifications of Sony's various camera models. For this reference guide, we have chosen to focus on the current generation of camera systems for the sake of clarity and brevity. While many of these camera bodies are in their second generation, the chart's list of features strives for inclusivity, making it unnecessary to recall details of old models that have carried over, as they are still listed here.

Our popular comparison chart of Phantom high-speed cameras by Vision Research now includes the Ultra-High-Speed v2640 Onyx specialty, rent-only camera. The Phantom v2640 Onyx boasts the world’s fastest 2K sensor, with the lowest noise and highest dynamic range of any global shutter Phantom camera. It is capable of capturing up to 12,500 fps at 1080p. The Onyx has been optimized for cinema production, making it the ideal choice for projects where extreme slow motion and high image quality are required, such as VFX, commercial, and tabletop applications.

When we first launched our FOV 2.0 tool, we promised an update to support anamorphic lenses and camera modes. We’ve now implemented this feature, adding several cameras and 2x anamorphic lenses.

Canon’s Cinema EOS camera line has matured to include options for all levels of production and all budgets. There are single-operator, handheld cameras like the C100 Mark II and the new C200, with its ability to shoot Canon’s Cinema RAW Light internally. At the higher end are models oriented to feature production: the C700 and the new full format C700 FF, both sporting flexible shooting and recording modes and the ability to send Cinema RAW to an on-board Codex recorder. In the middle sits the C300 Mark II with its class-leading documentary features and high-quality internal codec.
