As a Director of Photography and producer/director, there are lots digital cinema cameras to choose from. There are a number of options that meet the needs of many DPs, camera operators, media companies, and in-house production departments, are capable of UHD 4K HDR acquisition, and cost less than $10,000. In addition, many of these cameras have capabilities that go well beyond that spec. But, which camera do you choose for your next production?

While the industry has shifted focus towards cameras with S35 (or larger) sensors with interchangable lens mounts, many shooting situations benefit from a large zoom ratio and compact design. The Canon XF family was just updated with the introduction of the XF705, a compact 4K UHD camera with a 15x "L" series zoom lens with 5-axis optical image stabilization.

Following our previous blog post introducing the new Canon EOS R full format mirrorless still and video camera, I dive a little deeper into some of the video-centric aspects of the camera.

Canon has announced their entry into the full format (aka full frame) mirrorless camera market with the EOS-R. The EOS-R represents a new chapter in Canon’s lineup of video-focused still and motion cameras. Sandwiched between the traditional, mirror box-based EF-mount EOS cameras (such as the 5D Mark IV, 7D Mark II and others) and Canon’s purpose-built motion cameras from the Cinema EOS line (C200, C300 Mark II and C700/FF), the EOS-R presents a compact, highly capable body for both stills and motion using a new full format 30.3MP sensor similar in specification to the 5D Mark IV. The camera body also features a 3.69M dot EVF and articulating LCD touchscreen.

Canon's C200 employs a new recording format, Cinema RAW Light, that allows users to record DCI 4K RAW files directly to the camera's internal CFast card slot.

Canon's Cinema EOS camera lineup includes the C100 MK II, C200, C300 MK II, C700, and the new C700 FF. Canon’s Cinema EOS camera line has matured to include options for all levels of production and all budgets. There are single-operator, handheld cameras like the C100 Mark II and the new C200, with its ability to shoot Canon’s Cinema RAW Light internally. At the higher end are models oriented to feature production: the C700 and the new full format C700 FF, both sporting flexible shooting and recording modes and the ability to send Cinema RAW to an on-board Codex recorder. In the middle sits the C300 Mark II with its class-leading documentary features and high-quality internal codec.

The Canon C200 is a compact camcorder that utilizes the same basic sensor as their flagship Super35 digital cinema camera, the C700. One of the C200's most striking features is the ability to record 4K RAW files in Canon's new Cinema RAW Light format to an internal CFast card. Cinema RAW Light is a lightly compressed RAW video format that maximizes recording time while giving up very little file quality in comparison to "full fat" RAW.
