I recently got a chance to take a closer look at Canon's premium Sumire cinema prime lenses. In this video, I'll provide some historical context for their development, an overview of design and performance, and many examples of their aesthetic and optical characteristics.

In October of 2018, Canon introduced the EOS-R, the first in a new line of full-frame mirrorless still and video cameras along with a new lens mount, dubbed ‘RF’. Unlike the familiar EF mount, which debuted in 1987 with the original EOS series of film cameras, Canon’s new mirrorless mount provides a greatly reduced flange focal distance — also known as flange depth or registration distance — along with a higher bandwidth data pathway between bodies and lenses.

The Canon EOS C70 marries the strengths of the Cinema EOS series with the EOS R series, which results in a compact but powerful S35 4K solution for all scenarios. In this video, I'll explore how the C70 is a perfect "bridge" camera for DSLR or mirrorless users making the transition to cinema.

At this point in time, audiences have become accustomed to the idea of award shows incorporating some version of remote or virtual collaboration, especially as travel restrictions keep much of the talent at home. So when Dick Clark Productions chose to reunite the Emmys producing team for this year's Golden Globes and reached out to Mike Nichols, AbelCine Business Development Manager, our previous experience with the remote camera and lighting kits proved invaluable. We were able to build, set up, deliver, and remotely control a number of identical "drop kits" that were delivered to various nominee locations across the country.

Today Canon announced the C70, the latest model in their line of Cinema EOS digital cinema cameras. It uses the same Super35-format sensor as the C300 Mk III, including Canon’s DGO (Dual Gain Output) technology for 16+ stops of dynamic range, their legendary Dual-Pixel Autofocus, and is the first Cinema EOS camera to use Canon’s RF lens mount (which first debuted on the EOS R full-frame mirrorless stills-oriented body). All this is packed into the smallest Cinema EOS body ever – yet with few compromises in terms of the features and functionality Canon users have come to rely on over the years.

Digital video capture devices are omnipresent in our culture, and the average viewer’s subconscious understanding of what constitutes quality video is more informed than ever. Nearly everyone has a high-def capable (often 4K) camera in their pocket these days. With such a powerful imager so close at hand, more complex cameras need to reach ever higher and higher peaks of image quality. One of the many things that cinema cameras do to differentiate themselves is to offer high-latitude, extreme dynamic range gammas, like Log. However, “hybrid” gamma settings like Canon’s Wide Dynamic Range gamma, have distinct benefits too, especially in the remote production world.
