First Look: Canon Pre-NAB Announcements

Recently, Canon's Ken Rowe stopped by our office to give us a sneak peek at two new products that will be debuting at NAB, the Compact-Servo 18-80mm zoom lens and their latest multi-purpose camera, the ME200S-SH.

03_CTZ037_Slant_FL_without_CTZ203_2048 Canon EF lenses have become a mainstay in our industry, so it's no surprise that Canon has been actively developing EF lenses specifically for shooting video. The Compact-Servo 18-80 T4.4 is the first in a new line that Canon is planning, designed to fill the gap between their popular EF lenses and the higher-end Cine-Servo lenses. Designed for S35 acquisition, the Compact-Servo is only 3.5 pounds, but packs a servo drive for focus, iris, and zoom control. The ZSG-C10 removable handgrip can be attached in the traditional ENG configuration, but its ARRI style rosettes also open up rigging possibilities and allow you to relocate the grip to a different shooting position. Because the handgrip uses a standard 20-pin connector, Canon zoom or iris demands can also be used with this lens. The focal length is an especially great choice for those shooting multiple cameras, as the field of view of the 18-80mm on a S35 camera will match the 24-105 f/4 on a full frame camera.

Also revealed today is Canon's new ME200S-SH, which is a Super 35 multi-purpose, modular camera. The ME200S-SH features the same sensor as the C100 Mark II, and its compact size makes it ideal for a wide range of uses, including live events, installations, and POV applications.
