Since the 1970s, ARRI has produced a number of lens series that have gone on to be staples of the industry. Originally designed to work primarily with ARRI cameras via the bayonet mount, their popularity quickly soared, and ARRI started manufacturing lenses for every cinema camera after developing the PL mount.
ARRI, whose ALEXA LF and ALEXA LF Mini were pioneers of the current full frame revival (LF = “Large Format”), drew on everything they had learned from previous lens families, along with valuable feedback from renowned cinematographers to develop the full frame Signature Primes and Zooms, which were released in 2020. In designing these lenses, ARRI went back to the drawing board. Notably, they moved away from the industry-standard PL lens mount, which they had pioneered, in favor of developing an brand-new standard for the industry, the LPL mount.
ARRI’s Signature lenses are designed exclusively for native LPL-mount, with a shallow lens flange, allowing them to be much lighter and smaller than their PL counterparts. This shallow flange also allows the rear element to be much closer to the sensor, allowing for easier back focus adjustments and a more forgiving focus tolerance. The dimensions of ARRI’s new LPL mount can accommodate all current, commonly used digital sensor sizes. The LPL mount allows for the design of smaller, lighter, and faster lenses with enhanced imaging quality properties and greater sensor coverage.
While Signature Primes exemplify state-of-the-art optical precision, they have been designed to render organic, emotionally engaging images, gently softening and texturizing the large format with natural skin tones and creamy bokeh.
