Description
Intermediate
The workshop will cover how to achieve frequently requested grading styles and looks, as well as a discussion of the cultural meanings or concepts they impart to a project.
Overview

Overview

AbelCine has partnered with the International Colorist Academy (ICA) to offer this advanced workshop for working colorists. In this practical, two-day workshop, participants will work with frequently requested grading styles and looks. The workshop will cover how to achieve these looks, as well as a discussion of the cultural meanings or concepts they impart to a project. The goal is to achieve new looks from old techniques.

The workshop begins with a presentation of standard looks from a historical perspective. It then quickly moves into practical examples and experiments. We cover common techniques, ways to reverse engineer Looks and ways to develop new Looks. Emphasis is on adding meaning and relevancy through creative interpretation. Each participant can approach the course with their own ideas and objectives, and everyone is encouraged to bring their own media to use in addition to the course media. Computers are provided for each student, and class systems are Resolve and Nucoda FilmMaster, or participants can bring in their own laptop system.

This workshop is an exciting meeting of like-minded colorists and an opportunity to practice and try new ideas without the pressure of a client in attendance. Taking advantage of this is a rare opportunity to sit together with other colorists and bounce challenges and experiences around.

Topics:

  •  What makes a “Look” iconic
  • The difference between a “Look” and a “Style”
  • Cinematic uses of color and contrast
  • How to analyze and reproduce reference looks
  • The best tools for black and white
  • How digital tools can imitate a chemical bleach bypass
  • When to use color washes and color casts
  • Different ways to handle day for night and time of day grades
  • How to manage isolation effects
  • How to have happy accidents!

NOTE: This class is recognized by the Motion Picture Editors Guild and their members are eligible to get two thirds of cost of the class reimbursed through Contract Services. More information at www.csatf.org. You must apply to them and be pre-approved in order to qualify for reimbursement.
