The Accelerator Program allows individuals or companies with an idea for a new camera accessory or other production-related product to partner with us. They gain access to all the physical resources of the Development Center, including a well-appointed machine shop, and the ability to collaborate with our engineers on their product design. In addition, AbelCine can help lower manufacturing costs, consult on sales and distribution, and provide marketing services.
Our first Accelerator Program partner is Sam Sielen. As a documentary DP and camera operator, Sam started building his own custom rigs and accessories, all handmade and one-of-a-kind. Eventually, he started Fathom Camera to make some of these inventions available to other filmmakers. After an initial, small run of the Fathom Camera Cage One, Sam realized he needed AbelCine's help in the final stages of bringing his product to market. When he connected with us in the fall of 2018, Jesse and his team saw the potential in the camera cage and agreed to help Sam develop it.
The AbelCine product development team worked with Sam on modifications to the Cage One that improved its design and helped streamline manufacturing. Our machine shop was used extensively in the process of prototyping and testing the revised design. This machine shop is equipped with a 3D printer, CNC lathe, CNC milling machine, bandsaw, and drill press. Our sales and rental inventory were also used to ensure the product’s compatibility with a variety of mirrorless and DSLR cameras from different manufacturers.
Access to AbelCine’s manufacturing partners allowed the Fathom Camera Cage One to be produced at a lower cost and in greater quantities. AbelCine also brought our knowledge of industry trends and equipment sales, an in-house marketing department, and an international distribution network to the partnership.
“Working with AbelCine was a catalyst for scaling up production and expanding the distribution channels for the Cage One,” explained Sam Sielen. “Abel’s highly qualified team provided the knowledge and direction to help Fathom overcome many of the obstacles we encountered in the early stages of starting a business in this industry.”
When Accelerator partners want feedback directly from end-users during the development process, they can tap into AbelCine’s client base as well. We are ready to support our partners on the business side of selling their products, so they are free to focus on what they do best.
The Fathom Camera Cage One will be available mid-May for $495 through the CameoGear distribution network, which includes AbelCine, B&H, and CVP.
