Canon C100 Tutorial: Waveforms, Gamma, and Custom Picture Profiles

Jem Schofield, of theC47, has presented a number of popular classes in our NY Learning Point, and now he's bringing that expertise to Canon's newest tutorial series on the C100. In his latest video tutorial, Jem takes an in-depth look at a topic that we often get questions about, specifically how to properly use a waveform monitor. He also discusses gamma and custom Picture Profiles, so make sure to watch the full video above.

Canon's C100 Tutorial Series actually starts from the ground up, covering how to build the appropriate rig for your C100 and customizing the camera's settings to make your shoot easier. In his Shooting with the C100 installment, Jem creates an interview-style setup to show exactly how to work with the camera in a real-world shoot, including setting up white balance, getting your ISO/Gain correct, and how to properly use the C100's One-Shot Auto Focus. Another of the more recent installments features a thorough walkthrough of the C100's Video Assist features such as zebras, peaking, edge monitor, and magnification.

For those who want to spend an entire day getting hands-on training with the C100, keep your eye out for our Canon C100 Workshop on both coasts. And if you happen to be in the LA area around the time of Cine Gear, make sure to stop by and say hi to Jem during our special Modern Camera Movement & Advanced Wireless Solutions event!

Originally, they were published with only the C300 in mind, but they were later updated to work for the C100 and C500 as well.

One of the advantages of the C100 sharing a sensor with the C300 and C500 is the interoperability between scene files. While the C300 and C500 can share profiles with a bit of simple computer know-how, if you want to use those same profiles on the C100, you'll have to manually copy the settings. I took our C300 scene files and copied the settings to the C100 - our vectorscope confirmed that the profiles are nearly identical, although the C100 tends to be slightly less saturated.
