At the Bench: Switronix JetPack Breakout Box

Rare is the camera kit that has no accessories hanging off it. Monitor, lens controller, wireless transmitter, signal converter, timecode clock, focus rangefinder -- sometimes the camera can barely be seen under the accessories. These devices need power, and often the cameras themselves do not have enough outputs available. Switronix has created several versions of the JetPack, a battery mount (Anton Bauer or V-lock) with multiple power outputs in a variety of useful voltages.

Each version has multiple mounting points to use with battery rigging solutions such as the Wooden Camera Battery Slide or the Anton Bauer Matrix Plate. Except for the P-Taps, which feed power out directly from the battery, all outputs are fully regulated to the specified voltage.

The JP-A-EPIC ("A" for Anton Bauer, JP-V-EPIC for V-Lock) is designed for use with the RED EPIC and Scarlet cameras and has the following outputs:

  • 2x unregulated P-Taps
  • 1x cable feed to plug into a RED EPIC or Scarlet camera
  • 2x Lemo-4 12v socket
  • 1x Lemo-2 5v socket
  • 1x USB 5v socket

For convenient mounting on the RED cameras, the Jetpack is also compatible with the Wooden Camera Quick Back.

The JP-A-BMCC (JP-V-BMCC for V-Lock) is designed for use with the Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera and has the following outputs:

  • 2x unregulated P-Taps
  • 1x cable feed to plug into a Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera
  • 1x Lemo-4 12v socket
  • 1x Lemo-3 7.2v socket
  • 1x Lemo-2 5v socket

The JP-A-XLR (JP-V-XLR for V-Lock) is designed for cameras accepting an XLR-4 power input, such as the Sony PMW-F3 and has the following outputs:

  • 2x unregulated P-Taps
  • 1x cable feed ending in XLR-4 12v plug
  • 1x Lemo-4 12v socket
  • 1x Lemo-3 7.2v socket
  • 1x Lemo-2 5v socket

For the new Sony PMW-F5 and PMW-F55, AbelCine asked Switronix to make a modified version of the Jetpack. The JP-A-BFIS (JP-S-BFIS for V-Lock) mounts directly to and feeds power through a V-Lock plate. In addition to the P-Taps, the other outputs are all wired Arri standard, matching those on the Alexa cameras. Outputs:

  • 2x unregulated P-Taps
  • 1x unregulated male V-Lock plate
  • 2x Fischer-3 12v sockets
  • 1x Lemo-2 12v sockets
  • 1x USB 5v socket
