The Nano Primes are targeted towards cinematographers helming streaming/TV series, film, commercials, music videos, and other independent productions. However, the overall design and T* coatings used on the Nano Primes match the look of ZEISS’ much more expensive Supreme Primes, allowing smaller mirrorless cameras to handle B- and C-camera duties on larger productions with Nano Primes, while the A-camera mounts higher-end lenses. Focus pullers will appreciate the 280° angular rotation of the Nano Primes' focus rings, as well as their asymmetrical iris scales for smooth, precise aperture settings. The new lenses use the Zeiss eXtended Data system in realtime to support the mount’s native metadata protocol and all electronics are included in the mount itself.
The Nano Primes are also smaller and lighter than other typical cinema lenses, ranging from 871g (less than 2lbs) for the 35mm focal length to 1.2kg (2.75lbs) for the widest and longest lenses. Each lens has 12 rounded iris blades for smooth, round bokeh at all aperture settings. The 18mm Nano Prime in particular, allows for a true wide angle field-of-view, even on smaller Super 35-format sensors. Of course, even with their full-frame image circles, the Nano Primes will work exactly like Super 35-format lenses in terms of both their focal lengths and aperture characteristics.
Above all, the Nano Primes’ excellent close-focus capabilities, combined with their fast T1.5 maximum apertures, will allow filmmakers of all experience levels to exploit the shallow depth-of-field characteristics of full format (aka full-frame) sensors found in Sony’s video-focused mirrorless and purpose-built Cinema Line camera bodies, and any other cameras utilizing compatible lens mounts.
