NAB 2015: Sound Devices PIX-E Monitors

Yesterday, I had the chance to visit the Sound Devices booth and talk to co-founder Jon Tatooles about the PIX-E5 4K recording monitor from their new Video Devices line.

The PIX-E series is the next generation of the popular PIX-240i. The PIX-E is smaller and lighter, with more resolution and monitoring capabilities - it is also more cost effective.

It features waveforms, vectorscopes and histograms - all the tools you'd expect from a pro monitor - with a 1920x1080 full raster panel, in a highly durable chassis. The PIX-E records 4K UHD or 4K DCI, as well as Apple ProRes 4444 XQ to new SpeedDrives, which are mSATA SSDs that double as USB 3.0 drives for fast offload of your media to any USB equipped computer.

An optional audio interface will also be available, the PIX-LR, that allows mic and line level audio to be input and recorded on the PIX-E5 via Sound Device's industry standard mic pre-amps.

The PIX-E will be available this summer, so check out my video to learn more.

At NAB this year, we were able to get a peek at the new Video Devices PIX-E5. The folks at Video Devices like to say that it's "a monitor that happens to record," which is certainly an understatement.
