It reduces transmission to darken the entire image and even exposure in an unbalanced lighting scenario. It also helps when shooting in a bright lighting condition for increased optical clarity while retaining color so you can adjust color with your optional filters or via color grading techniques.
This filter is commonly used for shooting with wider lens apertures to reduce depth-of-field.
