First Look: Canon XF405

Although many of the new camera announcements from the past few years have centered around S35 or other large sensor sizes, one challenge with these systems is the available zoom ratio, especially if you're looking for a more compact configuration.

With certain applications like sports or wildlife, you may opt for a large zoom range while maintaining a compact profile. Because it utilizes a CMOS sensor, the just-announced Canon XF405 is able to offer a 15x zoom range (35mm equivalent: 25.5mm – 382.5mm) in an incredibly compact body.

Featuring UHD recording up to 60 fps and HD up to 120 fps, the XF405 records to dual SD cards as AVCHD / MP4 files, with XF-AVC coming as a free firmware update in the future. It supports Canon’s Dual Pixel Autofocus with touch screen control, as well as their 5-axis image stabilization. Wide DR gamma mode is standard, allowing for flexibility in post grade without the complexities of Log. The camcorder includes the expected connectivity options, with HDMI, 3G-SDI, LANC (including support for the RC-V100), and twin XLR inputs in the removable handle.

The XF405 is expected to ship in November. Watch my video above to learn more!
