In addition to the compact characteristics of this lens, the front element can be exchanged for a uncoated front element. Anamorphic lenses of the past had unique flare characteristics, and this aesthetic is being used by filmmakers today. The uncoated front element adds a new flare characteristic that is inherent to the lens — no effects filters are needed. In this blog, I check out the specs of the lens and then shoot some interior and exterior footage to demonstrate this unique option.

I paired the VariCam LT with the Angenieux 30-72mm A2S and, more specifically, used the lens with the uncoated front element. This added a look to the footage and enhanced the flares. I achieved some really beautiful flares very easily at different focal lengths and iris settings. The 30-72mm Zoom is lightweight, small and mobile; the close focus on this lens is 2’ 2”, which made it great for the small spaces, and very practical for different shooting environments in general. While watching the footage, notice the colors of the flares, as well as the natural creamy skin tone, and the beautiful rendition of the colorful background. I also loved the bokeh it created. This would be a great lens for a variety of projects.
