Overview
The Nikkor 300mm T2.8 Prime weighs approximately 6 lb and includes a geared ring. With an aperture of T2.8, this lens offers a fast telephoto ideal for capturing sports, events, and wildlife on location.
This Nikon F Mount lens includes a 138mm front diameter, a rounded, 9-blade diaphragm for beautiful bokeh effects, and a diecast magnesium body.
Glass Details & Nano Crystal Coat
This 300mm prime includes (1) Super ED glass element and (3) ED glass elements. Nikon developed Super ED glass which features lower dispersion properties than the original ED (extra-low dispersion, which minimizes prism-caused color dispersion) and extremely high performance in eliminating the secondary spectrum. This minimizes chromatic aberration even further, along with other lens aberrations.
The coating on this Nikkor 300mm lens, the Nano Crystal Coat, originates from Nikon's work in semiconductor manufacturing technology. The Nikkor Nano Crystal Coat is an anti-reflective coating that employs an extra-low refractive index coating, featuring ultra-fine, nano-sized* crystal particles. These crystalized particles eliminate reflections inside the lens throughout the spectrum of visible light waves (380 to 780 nm) in ways that exceed the limits of conventional antireflection coating systems created when this lens emerged on the market.
Nano coating solves ghost effects by red light. It also reduces flares and ghost effects caused by light entering the lens diagonally, which results in clearer images for you.
Automatic Panning Detection
When subject movement needs to be emphasized, Nikon's VR detects camera movement for panning. It automatically suppresses the blur-correction function in these instances. For a horizontally moving object, only the vertical blue is corrected. Choose Normal Mode for panning shots. (See VR modes below).
Vibration Reduction (VR) System
Camera shake information is detected by the Vibration Reduction sensor of the VR lens unit, which is continually in motion inside the lens, aligning the optical axis with your camera's imaging sensor. This reduces image blur. By providing the equivalent of shooting at shutter speeds up to 4.5 stops faster, the system helps you achieve sharper shots when shooting sport scenes, dimly lit landscapes, and in handheld situations.
Selectable VR Modes include:
- Normal Mode - recommended for general scenes. Slow and wide camera movement is regarded as the photographer recomposing a shot and blur-correction operation is limited accordingly. Normal Mode also includes automatic panning detection.
- Active Mode - compensate for movement when you use the camera on a moving platform or vehicle or other unstable position. This helps the camera not misinterpret a camera operator's intentions. You should choose this Mode for further compensation, a more stable viewfinder image, and steadier footage.
- Sport Mode - works best with randomly moving objects, like what you find during a sports event or with wildlife. The manufacturer states that a more stable finder image is attained when utilizing a tripod. For shooting still subjects, Normal mode offers a higher blur-correction effect.
