Overview
This course explains the benefits of scene referred workflows, and in particular how to use ACES for grading. ACES is the result of over 15 years of collaborative effort under the guidance of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was developed to future proof post production, and significantly improve archive policies. It is especially useful for HDR and other markets where a solid color management system is required.
The course explains input transforms, the difference between scene linear and display linear, the render transform, and the display transforms. Learn how to create multiple deliverables from an ACES master, and how to integrate with VFX. The day includes practical time learning which tools work best and how to monitor and deliver great pictures using ACES color science.

- The Introduction to ACES
- The input device transform (IDT) by which image data from different cameras is transformed to a common colourspace (ACES).
- Picture rendering using the AMPAS reference rendering transform (RRT).
- The four key colour transforms: IDT, LMT, RRT, and ODT.
- How is ACES best applied to the DI pipeline, and how it aids CGI/VFX integration.
- The concept of working space. “Linear” mode (lift/gamma/gain) and “log” mode; contrast and brightness reinterpreted
- Various output device transforms to yield imagery suitable for D-cinema, HD, and other displays.
- The necessity of 3×3 matrix transform
- The future and HDR acquisition

Who Should Attend
This is an intermediate course for anyone with experience in post production, but aimed at colorists who wish to or need to use an ACES or similar color managed workflow. Since color managed workflows begin on set and end with delivery it is useful for everyone in the chain to understand the core concepts. This class is suitable for all systems, but uses Resolve and Film Master for practical exercises.
Certification
All students in this course receive an ICA certificate of completion.
