This provides a flexible companion to your other Canon equipment and allows you to build a simple but sophisticated on-set Canon workflow. The DP-V2421 also allows you to verify the looks of the ALEXA SXT cameras made by ARRI, as well supporting a linkup to ARRI's image quality settings and other features such as metadata and area markers.
The DP-V2421 features an aluminum frame design, offering rigidity and strength. Thoughtful ergonomic design including an anti-tip stand, function buttons on the front of the main unit, and built-in easy set-up transport handles, means that the DP-V2421 allows for portability and multi-purpose use, whether for on-set live video village monitoring, color grading, for viewing dailies, or for use in post suites or mobile 4K broadcast production-control rooms
Compatible with HDR Industry Standards
The DP-V2421 4K Reference Display is a full-specification HDR reference display compatible with HDR industry standards, helping to meet demanding HDR workflows.
The display facilitates a high luminance performance meeting the requirements of HDR standards, SMPTE ST 2084 and HLG. The DP-V2421 fully covers this range by actual luminance to help ensure that gradation and color can be accurately confirmed.
Improved Black Luminance/Shadow Area Gradation Performance
Canon's LCD technology helps ensure a black luminance superior to that of older CRT displays. Furthermore, video image quality is improved since it demonstrates high gradation performance even at low luminance levels and gradation in shadow areas can be more accurately reproduced without black defects.
Compatible with both HDR Standards
To monitor HDR content, two or more gamma curves must be supported. The DP-V2421 qualifies as a Dolby Vision mastering monitor, as it supports SMPTE ST 2084. It also supports Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG), which is in the process of being recognized as a global standard. The DP-V2421 is an excellent choice for either workflow.
SMPTE 2084 Compatible
The SMPTE ST 2084's dynamic range of 0.005 to 10,000 nits can be displayed as an arbitrary range. This is a new gamma curve developed by Dolby Laboratories, Inc. based on the human visual characteristics called PQ. Luminance up to a maximum of 10,000 nits is treated as absolute luminance. It is currently adopted in Dolby Vision and next generation Blu-ray standard (Ultra Blu-ray) HDR10.
HLG Compatible*
Provided with two gamma settings in the process of being drafted, "Hybrid Log-Gamma" (Y)" and "Hybrid Log Gamma (RGB)".
*NOTE: As of March 2016, only a draft version of the HLG standard has been distributed (scheduled to be the same when it is finally put on the market). The DP-V2421 includes and supports the latest draft version of the HLG standard for users who are contemplating production of HLG content ahead of others. Support of the official version will be evaluated while trends in establishment of this standard are monitored.
Two HDR Monitoring Modes for Specific Applications
The DP-V2421 4K Reference Display provides two HDR monitoring modes to suit specific production requirements.
Peak Luminance Priority Mode
Video can be monitored at the maximum luminance (peak luminance) supported on the DP-V2421 main unit. HDR image quality can be confirmed at high luminance on the DP-V2421 as an HDR reference display in post-production editing rooms, for example. Even when the area of bright parts of content changes due to switching between individual scenes in films or dramas, for example, changes in the brightness of the overall screen can be minimized. This allows the capabilities of the DP-V2421 to be fully demonstrated in high-luminance HDR production workflows.
Sustained Luminance Mode
In this mode, whatever the luminance of the video content that is being input, video is monitored without altering the luminance of the display main unit. The performance of the DP-V2421 can be fully demonstrated in scenes where shooting conditions during sports and music broadcasts fluctuate in real time due to changing weather and stage lighting even if the camera angle is fixed. This allows high-luminance HDR video images to be monitored without varying image quality at the individual luminance of displayed content, without so-called loading characteristics.
Functions for Supporting HDR Production
HDR/SDR 2 Split-Screen Display - The DP-V2421 4K Reference Display supports split-screen display of HDR and SDR signals. Since video is displayed simultaneously on the left and right screens, differences in luminance ranges and gradation/brightness can be compared at a glance, thus allowing HDR shooting to be conducted more confidence and efficiency.
Various other features can be combined to make HDR production easier to perform:
- Range Compression Display according to specific production applications
- Clipped Display
- Camera Information Display
- Waveform Monitor Display
HDR Compatible Waveform Monitor Display - The Wave Form Monitor can be selected to display HDR scales (e.g. SMPTE ST 2084 nit) or Canon Log (%) for maximum flexibility in HDR production.
HDR Range Variable Adjustment Function - Variable adjustment of the HDR range is possible to suit specific applications. For example, the dynamic range of the HDR standard signal or LOG signal can be displayed to fit within the luminance supported by the display main unit (range compression), or required actual luminance parts of the range can be displayed with the highlight range area excluded (range upper limit clipping). Desired values can also be registered in advance to function or channel buttons. This lets you call up respective HDR standard videos for confirmation by one-touch operation.
HDR Meta-information Display - Metadata information (color gamut, gamma, maximum luminance, average luminance maximum value of content) from PCs for HDMI-compatible video editing and Blu-ray players, cameras and other devices can be displayed on screen. This is useful for appropriate HDR production since videos can be monitored while confirming the HDR information at the same time.
Internal 4K RAW De-Bayering with 12G HD-SDI Input
The DP-V2421 4K Reference Display can perform 4K RAW format image debayering internally**, without the need for any external debayering equipment. This enables a sophisticated, yet simple 4K production-monitoring environment to be set-up with minimal wiring connections and as a result, greater mobility for the EOS C700, EOS C500/C500PL and EOS C300 Mark II digital cinema cameras.
When the DP-V2421 4K Reference Display is connected to either an EOS C700, EOS C500/C500 PL or EOS C300 Mark II digital cinema camera, the 4K RAW format image de-bayering process occurs in the reference display. There is no need for a 3rd party de-bayering unit. This allows you to display 4K/60p content with a single 12G-SDI cable.
It is also possible to use a recorder that does not include a de-bayering function by passing the signals straight through the DP-V2421 display to the recorder. Additionally, the DP-V2421 can display 4K/60p content from any 4K camera with a single HDMI cable- provided that camera supports 4K/60p output connection.
** NOTE: Internal 4K RAW format image debayering currently works only with the EOS C700, EOS C500/C500 PL and EOS C300 Mark II Digital Cinema Cameras.
Supports Cinema and Broadcast HDR Workflows
The DP-V2421 4K Reference Display is an essential tool if you're working in HDR. In a cinema style workflow, its size and capabilities make it versatile enough to use on set on a DIT cart, as a client display or as a close range grading or QC display in post. For sophisticated broadcast workflows, the DP-V2421 will be right at home in your control room or broadcast truck.
Integration with Canon Cinema EOS and ARRI Camera Systems
The Camera Link-Up feature of the DP-V2421 4K Reference Display allows seamless linking to the EOS C500 and EOS C300 Mark II digital cinema cameras and the ARRI ALEXA SXT camera system, allowing for increased flexibility on-set for camera assistants and DITs.
Information that can be displayed includes color temperature, f-value, ISO speed, shutter speed, gamma, color gamut, resolution, frame rate, I/P/PsF, and camera status (shooting or playback).
Camera Information Displays
When a Cinema EOS System camera or ARRI Camera system is connected to the DP-V2421, the camera's metadata can be obtained, and its contents can be displayed. This means that camera set up and confidence checks during shooting can all be done on the DP-V2421 itself rather than on the camera's viewfinder or display. This allows checks without disturbing the operator and increases on-set flexibility. (This feature is available when the SDI RAW format has been selected by Cinema EOS System camera, the 3G/HD-SDI format has been selected by ARRI Camera system.)
Camera Image Quality Linkup
An image quality linkup function automatically switches the image quality of the display based on the camera's meta information. This occurs when the Cinema EOS System camera or ARRI Camera system is connected to the DP-V2421. The fact that the image quality settings are linked automatically for the camera and for the display means that setting errors can be minimized.
Pre-set Log
Presetting by Cinema EOS System's Canon Log/Canon Log2/Canon Log3 and the ARRI Log C video display are also supported. Log C is preset to the main unit menu. So, all you have to do to check image quality is connect the camera- there is no need to add any special LUTs.
Create a Simple but Powerful Canon Cinema EOS Workflow
4K RAW Format Image Debayering
The RAW data which is output through the SDI cables from your Cinema EOS C500/C500PL or Cinema EOS C300 Mark II can be debayered in the DP-V2421 4K Reference Display and displayed. The fact that the 4K RAW format image debayering is done in the display unit itself means that there is no need for any external debayering equipment. This enables a 4K-production environment to be constructed with minimal wiring connections. This makes for a more compact camera and display combination and can help increase mobility during shooting.
On-Set LUT and CDL Functions
Color Grading System Link-up
The DP-V2421 (and the DP-V2410) 4K Reference Display can connect to various color grading systems. For example, while shooting on location you can connect to LiveGrade via a LAN, and manage your color using LUTs and CDLs while RAW debayering is executed. This information can later be transferred to your editing or grading session, helping to simplify your workflow and give you more consistency.
User LUT and CDL functions
The DP-V2421 4K Reference Display allows you to set multiple LUTs for each picture mode same as the DP-V2410. As a result, users can select up to eight LUTs in one picture mode for improved convenience. In addition, presets from CDL1 to CDL15 and a CDL details setting screen have been added. Users can also change the name settings for CDL1 to CDL15.
Faithful Color Reproduction Supporting 4K Cinema and UHD 4K Broadcast Standards
Broadcast and Cinema Standards of ITU-R BT.2020 and ACES2065-1 Supported
The display has an RGB LED backlight and IPS liquid crystal panel, characterized by excellent color reproducibility, in order to achieve the high-image-quality performance that can be optimally suited for on-location work. In addition to satisfying a multiple number of the latest broadcast standards such as ITU-R BT.709, EBU and SMPTE-C as well as the latest DCI-P3 digital cinema standard, it also meets the next-generation standards of ITU-R BT.2020 and ACESproxy, the transmission standards of ACES whose color management standard is advocated by AMPAS.
High Accuracy Uniformity
The DP-V2421 4K Reference Display achieves the same level of high-accuracy uniformity as the DP-V3010/DP-V2410. By incorporating a proprietary image processor developed for use in displays to enable fine-tuned adjustments, color and luminance unevenness on the screen can be prevented and high-accuracy uniformity can be achieved.
Smooth and Accurate Gradation Characteristics for each RGB Color
The display's 10-bit panel that expresses the shades of each RGB color in 1,024 steps and the high-accuracy display processor enable more accurate gradation displays.
Image Enhancement Functions
The DP-V2421 4K Reference Display has an array of image functions that give users the ability to control and modify the display's features and customize the overall look.
Backlight Scanning
The DP-V2421's backlight scanning uses a full array RGB backlight, allowing individual backlight areas to be partially turned off includes three adjustment choices (auto, high, low, and off). This feature helps reduce the image-hold period inherent to LED technology while images are being displayed, and results in crisp video playback, helping to reduce the perception of blurring between video frames. It also enhances static image contrast ratio.
Shape Trace
The majority of current cinema and commercial production work still uses HD and 2K video. The DP-V2421 is equipped with three types of screen scaling functions, including the Canon Shape Tracing technology™, an original shape-tracing technology that helps to minimize artifacts on images scaled on the DP-V2421. Using the Canon Shape Tracing technology, the DP-V2421 display detects the angles of hard edges and selects an appropriate interpolation to help provide smooth diagonal lines and optimal image rendering, further extending the display's application during location/studio shoots and within color-grading, DI, CGI, VFX and other post-production workflows.
ACES 1.0 Support
The DP-V2421 4K Reference Display supports the latest ACES2065-1 standard, and has received the ACES logo from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, after review of its ACES implementation.
The DP-V2421 is capable of providing RAW format image de-bayering and ACES Input Transform, enabling the reference display to transfer RAW format images to the ACES2065-1 images. These images can be displayed by adjusting the exposure and colors using a CDL's (color decision lists) and by performing ACES Output Transform processing. In addition, by sharing the CDL data using a USB connection, the signals output by on-the-set grading and editing set-ups have the same colors and gradations, so the look determined on-set or at an off-site grade can be maintained throughout the postproduction workflow.
The DP-V2421 also can be used with any source input that complies with ACESproxy.
Shoot Assistance Features
2-Sample Interleave
2-Sample Interleave is supported. This technology transmits up to (4) sub-imagers (2K/HD) that are obtained by dividing a 4K signal into 2-pixel units and re-assembling these together to make a 4K display. This also differs from Square Division in that, since images that are slightly out of position are sent, the angle of view can be confirmed even on 2K/HD monitors by displaying one of four inputs.
2/4 Split-Screen D Compatible
In the 2 split-screen display mode, the picture mode can be set independently on displays A and B. And, in the 2 split-screen display/4 split screen display mode, display of the division lines can be switched on and off. The camera information can be displayed at only one location (i.e. one input).
Zooming
On the DP-V2421, the functions have been carried out to allow selection of enlargement ratios (4x, 8x) and display at arbitrary positions. And, the provision of zooming modes 1 to 3 means that enlargement ratio and display position can be preset, thus improving ease of use.
Peaking
Canon has added to the DP-V2421 a peaking function that enables users to check the focus state at a glance. With high-definition video productions, this helps with the focus adjustment to bring the subjects into focus.
Fan Shutdown
The DP-V2421 features a mode in which the display's fan is shut down for a prescribed period of time during camera shooting***. This mode can be linked with professional-use cameras such as the Cinema EOS System to shut down the fan during recording. It is useful when the noise of the fan would disturb the atmosphere in a studio or other quiet shooting location.
***NOTE: The shutdown time may be shorter depending on how the display is used and the air temperature in the installation location.
Waveform Monitor and Vectorscope Functions
The DP-V2421 comes with waveform monitor and vectorscope functions. These are superimposed on the screen display. The signal level is displayed using the waveform monitor function (6 types: Y, Cr, Cb, R, G and B). The two color difference signals (Cb and Cr) are each displayed with "X axis/Y axis" using the vectorscope function.
False Color
A false color function that assists in setting the camera's exposure by displaying the input image using colors that differ according to luminance level is also provided. This makes it easier to visually perceive the exposure status while overexposure (above 100% luminance level) is indicated in red and loss of dark detail (under 0% luminance level) is indicated in blue, for example.
Capture
This function saves the currently displayed image as an image file in the USB memory. Users can choose whether to capture only the video signals or include the marker, waveform monitor and other image auxiliary functions and OSD menus as well.
Frame Hold (pause function)
This function stops the image to be checked and displays it on the screen. It can also be used to capture the image shown on the screen as a photo.
Area Markers
Area markers whose rectangle size, position, etc. can be set have been added. They are used for checking the areas where the subtitles and duration of TV broadcasts are to be indicated. The conventional 16:9, 4:3 and other presets, the manual settings and other aspect ratio markers at a variety of different view angles can be displayed. Also incorporated are functions for displaying safety zone markers, center markers and grid markers.
Background Color
When images are to be displayed, users can select white, gray or black as the color of the black bands in the image non-display areas which are displayed due to the differences in the view angle. This function is used to check the image quality at the boundaries of the image display and non-display areas.
Maintaining Consistency in Color Image Quality
In order to maintain consistent high image quality the DP-V2421 4K Reference Display utilizes built-in auto-correct functions that consistently monitor color, brightness, and other parameters that keep the display at a high level of uniformity at all times. These functions include:
Automatic Color and Luminance Correction System
The DP-V2421 comes with Canon's proprietary control system that is used to correct the fluctuations in color and luminance and the deterioration occurring over the years and achieve stability over a long time to come.
Calibration without a PC
The DP-V2421 achieves the same high level of stability as the DP-V3010/DP-V2410. In cases where color shifting or other problems have occurred due to the deterioration experienced over the years, accurate corrections can be made using your external sensor (CA-210/CA-310 from Konica Minolta) without having to use a PC.
Precise Color Adjustment Prior to Shipment
In order to achieve high color uniformity, each DP-V2421 4K Reference Display undergoes a high-precision calibration process before shipping from the factory. External calibration allows users to maintain factory settings as well as make adjustments for specific display applications.
OSD Menus Tailored to "for-use-on-the-set" Applications
While carrying over the proven operability of the DP-V2410, Canon has reduced the size of the OSD menu displays to the size that is optimally suited for the operation range. Various information added for use-on-the-set applications is easy to identify, and does not really obstruct the display of the images on the screen.
OSD Positions
Users can change the OSD positions according to the resolution of the images displayed.
Two modes are available:
- 4096 x 2160
- 3840 x 2160
Assignable Function Buttons
Functions can be registered to the function buttons in accordance with the intended applications. The frequently used functions can be called and used right away just by touching a button.
Easy-to-Use Control Area
The control area with its function buttons factors in different scenarios for shooting at many different locations, and it is extremely easy to use. The buttons and jog dial are laid out in the same positions as they are on the DP-V2410. The labels and buttons on the front panel control area are illuminated to enable operation even in dark places.
If operations are to be performed at a location away from the main unit, users can connect the color grading system using the LAN connector or connect a color grading controller using the USB connector.
Ergonomic Design
The DP-V2421 4K Reference Display provides minimal noise based on the design concept of the display and is designed not to interfere with video production work.
The aluminum frame design offers rigidity and strength and includes an anti-tip stand designed for stable installation. Carrying handles are provided on the sides of the main unit.
You can choose from two types of stands for positioning and screw holes are provided for securing the stand in place, which allows it to be installed in a variety of locations.
In addition, the display features a multilayer split exhaust structure to radiate heat. The duct shape and suction ports (mounting, area) have been optimally designed to control air flow, and heat radiation helps ensure both high luminance and reliability.
