Overview
This 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Prime Lens, part of Sigma’s Art line, has been redesigned, reengineered, and revitalized to offer exceptional image quality, plus focal point sharpness when wide open. Ideal for high-performance, professional DSLRs to shoot landscapes, studio or street photography.
The Sigma Art line of lenses aspires to achieve notable optical performance and suits creative applications. This lens fits right in with its fine art of lens crafting due to its lack of distortion and sharp imagery. Sigma has compared this lens to the ZEISS Otus 55mm f/1.4. Sigma’s 50mm f/1.4 achieves good bokeh due to the rounded diaphragm.
Autofocus
The HSM in the product's title refers to a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) which ensures smooth and quiet autofocus abilities. Sigma's AF algorithm and the ring-type AF motor can be interrupted to perform manual focus override at any time by turning the focus ring to refine your captured image. There should be no motor noise when you do this which is a boon for your audio post process.
Lens Features
With 18 elements in 8 groups, plus rounded blades, this lens stops down to f/16. It includes an aspherical rear element to correct aberrations. This lens also contains Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass and a Super Multi-Layer coating.
The widest elements are placed inside the front group (which you can see in the lens construction and diffraction chart PDF) which delivers an 85.4mm diameter lens and produces precise detail across the image frame. The large barrel is designed to reduce vignetting. It also helps with manual AF adjustments.
Please use 77mm filters.
It comes with a bayonet lens hood which offers a secure fit due to its rubber connection. There is also a zippered, padded case to protect your lens in transport or storage.
Compatibility
Since this lens comes with a Canon EF mount you can pair it with any Canon EOS C-series camera.
The lens is compatible with the Sigma USB Dock, sold separately, to update firmware and fine-tune lens characteristics. Sigma developed special software, SIGMA Optimization Pro, to accomplish this.
NOTE: The DG in the title is simply Sigma’s way of saying digital.
