Overview
Cooke S8/i T1.4 Full Frame Primes are true flagship lenses, offering a beautiful aesthetic and stunning optical performance. S8/i FF primes are faster, easier to maintain, and approximately 25% lighter than their S7/i predecessors, with an all-spherical design that evolves the classic “Cooke Look” for modern, full frame digital cinematography. These lenses are designed for all shooting applications, including handheld and Steadicam, providing a more comfortable balance ratio with the latest compact cameras, without compromising durability or image quality.
Evolving Optical Design & Performance
S8/i FF primes feature a uniquely organic cinematic quality, characterized by a smooth, natural, velvety, symmetrical spherical bokeh at the center, and an attractive “cat’s eye” bokeh manifesting off-axis (i.e., toward the edges of the frame), with minimal color fringing. This equates to high dimensionality in sensitive, emotive imagery.
Cooke S8/i primes feature excellent low light performance, thanks to a very fast T1.4 maximum aperture across the range. Aside from being among the fastest lenses designed for Full Frame capture, S8/i primes also offer greater control over depth of field and flare characteristics, without graining in low light conditions.
New /i Technology
Cooke S8/i primes feature the latest intelligent /i interface technology, including:
- /i data focus & iris position
- /i motion intertial data
- /i maps factory calibrated shading & distortion data
/i Technology provides cinematographers and camera operators with vital information on:
- Lens setting
- Focusing distance
- Aperture and depth-of-field
- Hyperfocal distance
- Serial number
- Owner data
- Lens type
- Focal length (both metric and imperial)
- Zoom position (when applicable)
/i Technology is accessible via a cable connector near the lens mount and contacts inside the mount which sync with /i compatible cameras and accessories. The new, third generation /i Technology board and component placement have also been redesigned with a high degree of modularity, to increase reliability and reduce servicing time.
Large Format Coverage
S8/i FF primes cover Full Frame and beyond, with a predominant 46.3mm image circle across the range (only the upcoming 18mm and 21mm focal lengths feature a smaller 43.3mm image circle). All Cooke S8/i prime lenses are color-balanced and color-matched with Cooke S4/i, miniS4/i, Anamorphic/i, PANCHRO/i Classic lenses, et al. They pair especially well with Cooke Varotal zoom lenses, due to very similar bokeh characteristics. A nine-leaf linear module iris assembly is fitted into the Cooke S8/i Primes.
Cooke S8/i lenses feature a hardened PL mount with /i Technology contact and will also be offered in LPL mount versions. The durable exterior includes a scratch resistant PTFE hard anodized finish is provided on all Cooke lenses, providing a hard-wearing surface to meet the most demanding environmental conditions.
Focus Movement
Cooke's Academy Award winning cam-style focus movement, coupled with the added benefit of a generous lens barrel diameter, has allowed for an increased number of focus markings (and two opposing focus scales in Imperial and Metric), particularly at close focus.
Every index mark is labeled. More detailed markings allow for more detailed focus control so you can get it right the first time. In addition, large, clear numerals on both sides of the focus barrel benefit the focus puller when shooting under difficult lighting conditions.
Accessory Compatibility
All Cooke S8/i Primes have a common fixed front diameter of 104mm, with a focus drive gear of 140T x 0.8 mod and an iris drive gear of 134T x 0.8. They also feature M105 x 0.75 screw-in filter threads.
