Overview
Phantom Flex4K high-speed camera with 64GB offers flexibility, low noise, and high dynamic range. Its Super 35mm 4K sensor delivers sharp, detailed images. You can capture from 15fps to 1000fps at 4K and almost 2000fps at 2K/1080p. Use the on-board camera controls instead of a computer or other interface to adjust settings and control the camera.
Customize your workflow to suit your production. The Flex4K records Cine RAW for fast, high-speed capture or Apple ProRes 422 HQ to improve downtime, save on hard drive space, and simplify your workflow.
Features:
- Full resolution 4096 x 2304
- Up to 1000fps at 4096 x 2160
- Ability to record on Phantom CineMag IV media (choose from 1TB or 2TB)
- Choose between 128GB or 64GB of internal memory on your Flex4K
- Monitoring - Three main 3G HD-SDI outputs, which can be configured as independent 4:4:4 1080p signals or used together to supply a dual-link 4K output, while maintaining a live HD signal
- Viewfinder - The Phantom OLED HD Viewfinder is recommended. Support for both component and HD-SDI-based viewfinders is included.
- Lens mount - Interchangeable between PL and Nikon F/G standards and Canon EF
- Optional Integrated battery mount supporting industry standard batteries
- Camera includes 2x 12V and 2x 24V accessory outputs
- Both Mac and Windows based software for Cine download and file conversion.
Recording
At maximum resolution and frame rate the camera will capture 5 seconds of video to 64GB. Record approximately 13 minutes when recording directly to a 1TB CineMag at 96fps.
Record in ProRes 422 HQ in Run/Stop (R/S) mode to capture up to 30fps at full 4K resolution. You can convert your footage outside the camera to another format, if you want. Vision Research states that they selected ProRes 422 HQ due to the inherent quality and compression value when compared to Cine Raw files. The great news about 24fps ProRes HQ is that 5+ hours of footage can be stored on a 2TB CineMag IV.
Multiple video outputs are available on the Flex4K:
- 3x 3G HD-SDI outputs in the rear (1x monitor or MON output and 2x recording or REC outputs)
- 1x 3G HD-SDI viewfinder output at front (VF)
- 1x component video viewfinder output at front (VF)
- 1x HD-SDI output
You can use the two REC outputs (3G HD-SDI) together to provide a dual-link 4K video output or you can configure them individually as 1080p outputs. The 4K setting is determined by settings of the other outputs. Be sure to read your manual to learn all the ins and outs of this camera. If you aren’t the reading type, then check out our blogs or join one of AbelCine’s training sessions with our qualified professionals. REC output will switch between live and playback.
The MON output can be switched between either Rec709 or Phantom Log modes.
The VF and MON output produce a live signal so you can monitor the action.
Flex4K records onto Phantom CineMag IV media which can be purchased in 1TB or 2TB memory sizes. Mount one to the side of the Flex4K. Raw Cine files can be transferred from RAM or recorded directly at speeds over 800 Megapixels per second. Use a CineMag to increase your total record time.
VRI created a helpful Record Time Calculator where you can estimate the maximum frame rate and record time at any given resolution. Select Flex4K, then your CineMag size to simulate recording direct.
Imagery / Sensitivity
The Flex4K delivers lower noise than Phantom’s earlier 2K camera. Exposure index extends from ISO 250T to over 1000 without significant loss of image quality. It also features a progressive scan shutter, with less than 1ms scan time, in place of a global shutter.
Instead of RGB gains like the prior Phantom cameras, the Flex4K allows white balance in Kelvin. You also receive image processing tools such as tone curves and color matrix, among other functions.
Menu Navigation
A full menu on the right side of the Flex4K provides on-camera controls of setup and other parameters on the built-in LCD screen. A select group of controls remain on the left side of the camera, too.
Audio
Enable audio using the audio menu on the camera body. Scroll right with the select knob to locate levels.
The Flex4K feds an AES/EBU signal into the AES input on the MiniBOB (included) or a Sync/Capture cable. Audio functions at sync-sound frame rates and above. Audio should be converted from analog to digital AES/EBU using an external digitizer, such as the Sound Devices MixPre-D compact field mixer.
Monitor audio live using the headphone jack on the camera body.
Power
You have 2x 24V input choices to power your Flex4K. Use one as your main AC power (220W). The other can opt as your battery power or behave as a backup. VRI recommends high-capacity batteries when using 14.4V.
