Overview
The Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features a handheld design with a 4/3 size sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range, and dual native ISO up to 25,600. This enables capture of stunning HDR images and exceptional low light performance. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K has an MFT (Micro 4/3) lens mount, mini XLR input (with phantom power), full sized HDMI, 3D LUT support, Bluetooth control, USB-C Expansion Port, and more. External controls provide quick access to essential functions, enabling you to quickly check framing and focus on the camera's large 5" touchscreen , capture audio via integrated microphones, and record your files without having to carry around extra monitors, microphones, recorders and cables. Images are recorded onto standard SD/UHS-II or CFast 2.0 cards in RAW and ProRes at up to 120 fps. The camera also features a 1/4"-20 mounting point for an external accessory.
This camera's form factor makes it ideal for shooting independent films and documentaries, fashion shows, travel blogs, web videos, weddings, corporate video, sports, et al. The incredible image quality, advanced Blackmagic Design color science and RAW recording features enable the user to capture images that rival professional digital cinema cameras costing significantly more. That means you get the image quality you need to seamlessly intercut footage from the BMPCC 4K with other types of cameras used on high end feature films and episodic television productions.
This camera utilizes the same MFT (Micro Four Thirds) lens mount as the original Pocket Cinema Camera, so you can use the lenses you already own. The MFT lens mount was designed specifically for smaller camera bodies with shorter flange focal distance (enabling use of high quality professional lenses that are much more compact than typical cinema lenses). The MFT mount is extremely flexible and allows for different lens adapters. PL, C, EF, and other mount adapters are available (sold separately).
Images can be recorded to standard SD cards, faster UHS-II cards, or CFast 2.0 cards. High definition video can be recorded using inexpensive SD media. Higher performance UHS-II cards can be used for recording Ultra HD in ProRes at up to 60 fps, and RAW at up to 30 fps. CFast cards can record 12-bit RAW at all supported frame rates. For longer recording times, you can also record directly to an external SSD or flash disk using the integrated USB-C Expansion Port, a fast, flexible connection with massive bandwidth that also provides power (quickly becoming standard on all modern computers and devices). This can be important when shooting high quality, lossless 12-bit RAW or high frame rate 60 fps 4K. Conveniently, you can use the same drive for editing and post production when shooting has wrapped. Files are compatible all professional post production software, and you can mount the media cards on your computer and start editing directly from them using the included DaVinci Resolve Studio software. Put simply, there are no proprietary obstacles in your post production workflow.
The full version of DaVinci Resolve Studio included with the camera is a complete post production solution, combining professional editing, color correction, audio post, and visual effects in one software tool. Whether you’re working on major Hollywood feature films, episodic television productions, music videos, commercials, indie projects, or the latest YouTube shoot, DaVinci Resolve Studio provides a completely lossless workflow for native editing, color correction, effects, audio, and delivery.
The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K uses the same Blackmagic OS as URSA Mini. If you’re just getting started, you can learn how to use the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K today and move up to an URSA Mini when ready, or, if you are already well versed with operating the URSA Mini, using the BMPCC 4K will be immediately intuitive. The modern touchscreen interface utilizes simple tap and swipe gestures to adjust settings, add metadata, and view recording status. The Blackmagic OS provides control of advanced camera features, including 3D LUTs for both recording and monitoring, HDR output via HDMI, metadata entry, custom presets, extended video format, Bluetooth remote control, external timecode from the audio input, RAW recording, and more.
This camera features professional, high fidelity audio recording so you don’t have to carry around a separate audio recorder. The camera features a mini XLR input with 48V phantom power for connecting professional microphones (such as lapel mics and booms; sold separately). There are also integrated microphones with an extremely low noise floor so you can capture great sound on location. An additional 3.5mm stereo audio jack allows you to use different types of onboard video camera microphones.
Despite its compact form factor, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features a full size HDMI connector, supporting advanced features like HDR output and clean 10-bit output, with on-screen overlays displaying full camera status for on-set monitoring.
The BMPCC 4K uses standard, removable LP-E6 type batteries. A professional locking DC power connector prevents accidental disconnects when running on AC power. The included 100-240V AC Adapter "plug pack" can be used to simultaneously power the camera and charge the LP-E6 battery (it also includes international socket adapters for use anywhere in the world). The USB-C Expansion Port also carries power, allowing you to charge the battery from portable battery packs, a mobile phone charger, or even your laptop computer (assuming sufficient output from your device).
