A Brief History of Starbird
George Starbird designed the Model 180 studio boom stand for large broadcast environments in the 1940s, with greater reach, range of motion, and stability than other large mic stands available at the time. The 180 quickly became the large studio boom of choice in the recording industry.
Starbird started Meletron Corporation in Los Angeles in 1939 to manufacture radio parts, though Meletron switched to manufacturing pressure-sensitive mechanical switches for the aeronautics, military, and industrial markets in the early 1950s, ceasing operations in 1970.
Manley Laboratories, Inc., known for their professional studio and hi-fi audio equipment, purchased the tooling and trademark for the Model 180 in 1991, producing an updated version of the Starbird in their California facility until 2010.
Triad-Orbit now offers the Starbird Super Boom Stand in its third and most refined iteration to date.
