TRIBE7 was formed in 2018 by artist and Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young, ASC and motion picture camera and lens technologist Neil Fanthom with the intent of developing new tools and approaches to cinematic image capture. With the successful launch of the custom tunable, full format BLACKWING7 lenses in 2019, this collaboration between the two companies will enable TRIBE7 to establish a local sales, service, and support infrastructure to meet the needs of the growing base of North American BLACKWING7 users.
BLACKWING7 primes feature customizable tuning, allowing parameters like sharpness, contrast, roll-off, spherical aberration, field curvature, edge halation, and flare to be modified; this results in sets of ‘curated’ optics to suit the personality and intent of the owner. Each BLACKWING7 lens is modified, conceptually, in the same way EQ adjustment is applied in music production. The result is a "musical fidelity," where each focal length has an underlying level of distortion, which can be controlled to produce artistic resonances, including unique flaring characteristics.
Together, AbelCine and TRIBE7 will continue to increase awareness of BLACKWING7's unique design characteristics and optical variants, enabling cinematographers and creative storytellers to expand their expressive capabilities.
Under the agreement, AbelCine becomes the exclusive sales distributor of BLACKWING7 lenses in North America, and will provide full support out of its Burbank, CA and Brooklyn, NY locations. This includes sales support, warranty service, repair, lens tuning, and service training for qualified rental houses.
