At the Bench: Quasar Lighting

Quasar Science has created some of the most versatile LED lighting for the industry, packaged in the familiar form factor of what would have formerly been a flourescent tube. In this video, I show what makes their Q-LED Rainbow (RGB) and Crossfade (bicolor) fixtures so unique and how they can be used to create different looks, from a standard interview setup to a dramatic "fashion motion" editorial shoot.

Quasar's Q-LED Rainbow lamps feature full RGB control. As a result, the most common color temps can be accessed as presets or the fixture can be set to a specific Kelvin value in custom mode. Different effects modes are possible as well (fire, police, paparazzi, strobe, etc.). These RGB LED lamps can be controlled manually or wirelessly and can operate independenty or be paired to work as a single fixture, such as when put into a frame. Several lengths of lamps are available, as well as rigging accessories.

Q-LED Lithium lights feature a built-in battery, making them a great solution when power sources or size profile are factors. Watch the video above to see how a handheld Q-LED Lithium provides consistent lighting levels for a runway fashion shoot. The reasonable cost of these instruments, combined with their low power consumption and near-endless rigging possibilities, make them well worth a close look for DPs and gaffers at any industry level.
